Alright chaps first post for me on here wondered if anyone how could give me a idea on how much this is going to hurt my wallet. my wife was driving our 98 tdi300 on m5 and suddenly temperture went right in the red steam coming out the bonnet loss of power gets to hard shoulder recovery truck takes her home i had a quick look the coolant bottle got a split in it ive lost water and the oil is right to the top on the dipstick so thats most of the oil mixed with the water im guessing headgasket at this point cheers mick.

Have a look inside the rocker cover from the filler cap. If it looks like a cappuccino has been poured in it then there is water in there. Head gasket is quite straight forward to do but I imagine a garage would want a few hundred notes for it or more if the head needs skimmed as well

biggest cause ive found is rad when fixed check its hot all over if it isnt replace it or head gasket again ,head gasket is quite easy on 300 tdi as no timing is effected and turbo can be pulled out of way without disconnecting completely ,parts are cheap
