Hello it looks like I`ve been sold a wrong un I`d checked the oil filler cap and it was as clean as a whistle any way a week after buying I was just checking all the levels and looked in the cap again and the dreaded mayonaisse is there he must have wiped it clean before I got there I can t believe I`ve fallen for it.
Anyway sorry for the rant back to my question and I suppose its like asking how long a piece of string is but does anyone have an Idea how much the going rate is for a headgasket doing (hopefully thats all it is )

Gaskets are as cheap as chips, the labor for doing it is the pricey bit. I should imagine between £750 and a £1000 at a garage.

Could have a go yourself, plenty of people on here will give you advise. There was a chap a few years ago (from Scotland I think) was talked through the job, went from a new member to 500 posts in a day!! It was quite a comical read. From memory he had never picked up a spanner in his life but I think he got it done. Disappeared so don't know the final outcome.

It might not be the gaskets, it could have done lots of short journey's and never got up to temp. I should have a sniff test done first to confirm. Are you loosing much coolant?

head gasket on mine was easer than i thought. have a good read then do it your self.
composit gasket set with bolts=£50
heads skimming = £80
new oil and anti freeze = £60
but i would look for what has caused them to fail.

Hello as I said I`ve only just got it so dont know any of its history ,do you know whats the best way to diagnose the cause. it hasnt lost any coolant in the week I`ve had it theres no smoke on start up its running great apart from the first 30 seconds every morning when it seems to be hunting but levels out in no time it takes about half to a mile to switch to lpg where my last one would change over within 200yds but I just put that down to different lpg systems ?.
I`m going to take it for testing today so I`ll update this later

You know the best thing to do, is take it for a run, like a real run, say 80 to 100 miles, then it will burn off any water you have in the oil, and then if its nice a clear after that all its cost you is the fuel to do it

Hello
Sorry I haven`t updated but the mechanic I usually see is away but I`ve read some advice on what to check so I went through them ,checkoil= fine, check water and expansion tank =fine, run engine for 10 mins with heater on full then check the top hose= fine then slowly loosen expansion tank cap if it gushes out its a problem if it just hisses its fine = no problems re-check oil=fine I `ve had it a week now and it hasn`t lost any water.
I was talking to a wagon driver and he and a friend (different cars ) both had a bit of mayo in the oil filler caps over winter doing just short trips and both thought they had headgasket problems but both were fine.
were taking our son to leicester university in 2 weeks for a look round and his audition which will be around 300 mile round trip so we`ll see how it goes . thanks for all the replies and help .
