hi andy, ive got the same problem with my 51 plate mondeo 3,
i'm reliably informed that it is the oil cooler that has failed, and is a pig to diagnose!
the good thing is that if youve had your head gasket changed , you should be good for another 105,000 miles lol
ive also been told that there will be discolouration and gunge for a while after.
the acid test is get a compression test done on your vehicle, and see if your comp is down at all.
this may not help you but it may give peace of mind, good luck with it anyway!

Hi have very similar problem. I live in Greece so no local parts available.

Yesterday after driving for 45 min the car lost a lot of power when accelerating.
I noticed the temp gauge was at 3/4 way.
I pulled in within 1 min.
The top hose had burst, plus there was grey oil gunk all over the top of the engine.
I had lost 1.5 -2 liters of oil.
Luckily ended up close to a garage near home.
We repaired the top hose and refilled the oil and coolant.
The car drove home OK (4 miles)
Temp level normal.

There is no water in the oil. (Dipstick)
There is some oil in the coolant header tank.
The repairs is leaked, the coolant level fell on the trip home is due to the top pipe repair leaking I think.

Local mechanic here reckons likely to be the oil cooler.
I am really hoping he is right.
Any advice? BTW there is over 200,000 miles on clock.
David
