Hi Guys,

the inevitable has happened lolll... its gone along with a piston burn out! So been quoted about 800 quid by garage... is dat ok price to pay fr head gasket problem?

Sorry to ask but am totally naive ... need help bigggg time!

I am assuming that you have the petrol engine, if it is fixed it will more than likely fail again in around 30K. It all depends on the value of your freelander. It may not be worth it. You could break it for spares and buy a cheap second hand l-series diesel freelander instead. Should find one with an MOT for about a grand to £1500.

cost me about 300 in all, we did it ourselves

get a haynes manual, and start ordering off ebay :D

also took the opportunity to do the water pump and timing belt while we were there, but these jobs were far from easy in comparison to the head gasket, that was more time consuming than difficult

piston burn out.. as in a hole in the piston.. meaning you need a new piston.. and that means pulling the bottom end to get it out... ouch...

£800 doesn't sound too bad from a decent garage but you could probably shop around and get it cheaper.. or do it yourself.. be prepared for a seized bolt ruining your month and you'll be fine...

Might be better to get the gasket from a specialist to make sure you get the upgraded one. I believe a lot of the older crap is being flogged off through ebay.
