head bolts

good afternoon,
do the head bolts have washers?,when i took my head off to have the lead free work done there were none,i have seen head bolts for sale and listed alongside are washers,if yes is there any reason why general purpose washers of the correct size could not be used, also on an iron block is it really necessary to use new bolts if the originals are good?,

I would say no washers, and no general purpsos washers wont be man enough.

Again guessing but reckon washers came about as they went to alloy heads whenever that was 19j/tdi?
