Hi guys,
Recently bought a 2005 freelander cheep as a project, but am stuck on a simple light . Hdc light goes thru motions on start up and all waring lights off. If I turn on hdc it lights up as normal, select first it's fine, select reverse the amber warning comes up. Ok if I cycle the ignition it's gone again. If I drive off without hdc engaged the amber hdc light will come on in 30 sec or so with speed. Only code logged in system is C1151 can gearbox data failure. Brake and reverse light switches both work and have a weird slide type black switch behind throttle. Throttle cable has good slack. Abs works as it should any suggestions??
Thanks in advance

Have you checked the first gear switch is working properly and not stuck?

When you turn on HDC in neutral does it flash green?

Yes it stays green in neutral and I can pull away in second and from what I can tell hdc works eg abs like kick in and it flashes seems like normal but when I sit h it off the orange light comes on, and will come on in normal driving with hdc turned off. Where is first and reverse switch on gearbox? It's a two wheel drive

If I put it in reverse with hdc engaged it also switches it to amber, it does it with no other gear. I don't mind hdc not working but having light on dash drives me mad

So the HDC light doesn’t flash green?

If so that means the first gear switch is stuck as of first is engaged all the time

What engine is it?

Yes does flash green. The system works when engaged. It's 1.8 petrol engine. Another thing is had a look this morning and the only 2 switches I can find on gear box is on the front looking from front of car and on the bottom and one is missing a wiring loomed switch is there just no loom. Reverse lights work no probs and no aftermarket reverse switch installed so I presume its the 1st gear swith not installed. Am baffled

Iv no prob making a new loom, just don't know where to bring it back too? Any suggestions, also are the switches right

Download RAVE from the links at the top and you’ll be able to see the location of the first gear switch and also look at wiring diagram and work out where the wires need to go - basically an earth and a feed to the instrument pack

Wiring may be tucked up safely if the engine/gearbox has been out previously

OK this is gonna sound really strange. But got a company to check a k series gearbox and the color or wires to 1st gear switch. He told me it was green with black cheese and black.
So check in the loom closest and that color combo connection went to the bottom or thermostat monitoring housing on right of engine. It has to sensors so pulled the back one off that's the correct color combi for 1st gear switch and sent to 1st gear switch, perfect length and all warnings off.

I pulled the connection of the blue sensor, what is that one? I know the other one is coolant sensor

Early cars I believe had two temp senders - one for the engine management and one for the temp gauge.

Looks as if engine has been changed at some point in its life
