Hi im quite new to the land rover scene and bought a freelander 1.8 petrol 5 door on a 52 reg i got it cheap and its proper clean but its got an issue and seems a bit weird to me...

Ok start freelander and HDC lights all light up and go out again so far so good..(at this point no lights at all on dash) Then you drive off by the time you get to about 10mph the orange/amber Hdc light comes on and stays on till you switch off and start it again, and its all ok till you get to 10mph again.. now this happens 99% of the time but today i noticed that if i was turning 90deg left turns the ABS light also came on with it then after a few seconds of straight driving the ABS would go back out and just leave the amber HDC light on...

Now what ive checked is this

Brake lights dont work with keys out or on acc position but do work with ignition lights on and when running, both bumper and center brake lights all work..

Gear lever HDC switch seems to be ok micro switch and wiring look ok..

If i flick the HDC switch with engine running and lever pops up green HDC light illuminates push down and switch off light goes out ???

Im a newbie on here and like my new toy but im getting scared already...

thanks in advance for any advice you can shed on its little issue

Hippo is right..

Ive got a 99 XEDi.. When i start i get all the lights (green and amber HDC, traction control & ABS), ALL of them go out after the engine starts along with the oil, SRS etc, etc, but the ABS stays ON until you get to about 8 MPH. Im told this is because the sensors on all 4 wheels need to "find" themselves (initialize if you like)..

HOWEVER, ive alos been told that form 02 onward, the ABS light should go out on start up, as form 02 on the software for HDC/TC/ABS was upgraded..

Now, my mates got a 52 td4, and after he starts it, his ABS light goes straigh out before he moves..

Try the brake switch first.. More than likely the problem, but could be something else....

So its a brake light switch and converter cable first then, can you get them online anywhere save going to dealer as mines miles away...

My brake lights are working ok though ??

If I remember correctly, theres multiple voltage levels measured via the brake pedal switch. So it can fail in a certain way that things work, but yer hippo has sensed a fault wiv it. May even be more than 1 switch in it. Bit late so can't remember at the moment. Also check the brake fluid reservoir level under the bonnet. But it's normally the pedal switch. Had several fail on mine (same part on the P38's ) then got a new type one and it's not failed yet.

Try lrseries online.

Replaced the switch today with the newer type and loom and its still the same, tried a few restarts but made no difference although it did stay of for a bit longer once ie i got about 5 miles before it came on instead of 100yds..

if i restart all lights go out and if i activate HDC the green light comes on sold if i move it flashes green, flick switch it goes out, and then after a 1/2 mile or so to 3 miles ish it comes on in yellow any more ideas where i can try to look next guys please...

wonder if it could be that its done this since i got it see only owned it 10 days but it had no bulb in at all when i got it and i fitted a 12v/21w capless as thats all i could get ??

When the yellow hdc light comes on, do the wind screen wipers and indicators still work whilst the engine is on tick over?

I had the yellow plague for a while. Ended up being a switch on the accelerator pedal. Fault would come and go. But first thing to change is the brake pedal switch as this is the one to fail first. I wrote about my problem while helping someone else the other day.

It will just draw more current as it's a higher wattage. Change the bulb to the correct one to be sure. It's cheap to do and will rule it out just incase there's a monitoring thing in the background or some sort of voltage balance monitoring.

Ok i will check that wipers on idle thing out hippo and replace the bulb, ive only owned this 10 days whats the record for shortest freelander ownership lol

How is your battery? I had 2 amigo's (HDC & TC) come on intermittently for a while and recently got worse. Then the battery failed and I changed it for a new one, no amigo problem since! I got the replacement switch too which I have yet to fit and will do so anyway.

ok an update replaced the 3rd brake light bulb with a 16w capless and went out and tried again got 50 yrds from house and HDC flickered and went out, then 50 yrds later came on and stayed on...

pulled over with light on and engine running tried everything, wipers, lights, horn heater blower, windows etc etc all works fine with the HDC amber light on and engine running, the only thing it does is the wipers sometime wont park on one touch wipe stop when you take your hand of arm etc, but it does this all the time with or withour HDC light on etc...

Battery wise mmm not sure its been stood all week and started ok etc hard to tell really that one.

To be honest I thought mine was fine until I was putting more demand on it. After I put the new one on, I placed the old one on charge. It has taken 2 days of normal charge to achieve full capacity!

I might try sticking the battery on charge then first as my freelander has been stood on a dealer pitch a bit then i got it 10 days ago and had nowt but grief since lol noticed it drips water in through interior light as well on my hand when changing gear too..
