Has my turbo blown up?

Hi guys, had a bit of a problem yesterday and wondered if anyone had any ideas what it might be?

I set off on a 100 mile journey and about 15/20 miles in, the whine noise from the turbo got really loud (i presume it was the turbo because it rose up in pitch through the revs as the boost picked up, then dropped when i changed up) i got out and had a look over it but nothing seemed to be amiss so carried on (as did the noise)

After 65 miles, i joined onto the M6, doing about 60mph and the whine noise from the turbo stopped, the engine lost pretty much all power, the exhaust note changed and now sounds like a 2.5na. I pulled onto the hard shoulder and clambered all round the engine bay but everything looked ok and had no choice but to carry on. It drove the whole way home, unable to do more than 50mph on flat, and the turbo felt like it wasn't working at all ( no whine or power in the upper revs) The engine still runs smoothly.

I'm pretty sure it's the turbo but just wondered if anyone else thought it could be something else that i have missed. It's a 1989 f-reg 90 with a Disco 300TDi in.

Many thanks, Harry

does it smoke when you floor it? it could be just a boost leak, but id get the bonnet up and give it a rev to see if you can see/hear/feel it building pressure.
if there is no pressure then take the inlet (to the turbo) off and see if it spins freely.

if it spins ok then its probably a boost leak

Thanks for all the help guys, went and had a tinker this morning to find that the turbo to intercooler hose had burst badly along the bottom then popped off (couldn't see it in the dark with no torch:doh:) had a bit of hose knocking around so have made a new one and all seems ok :D ...for once the problem turned out to be cheaper than i had expected!!:D
