I need to change the gearbox oil in my 300TDI 90 with the R380 gearbox.

I though this time i would follow Land Rovers recommendations and use MTF94 rather than the ATF I've used in the past.

So I set out to look for a supplier, I usually use Paddock for my spares but they don't stock it for some reason.

During my search I came across this outfit Silverhook Engine Oil, Antifreeze, Screenwash, Chemicals and Lubricants Manufacturer England has any one got any experience of their products? Are they any good? they seem to be quite good on price.

Hi, Silverhook are a budget brand company, if you value your car, then stick to something like Comma, or Castrol lubricants, Silverhook, is for the budget motorist who wants something cheap and cheerful. Will still do the same job as the Comma / Castrol stuff, but the chemical properties will brake down quicker.

Sorry forgot to say, the reason I know this, is because I have my own motor factors! And sell their products! (along side the better quality stuff)

There's more nonsense spoken about oils than even tyres, Silverhook will be no better and no worse than the top brands, just cheaper due to less advertising and all the hype that goes with it. ;)

I use Smith and Allan for my Oil and paints.

MTF94 from them. Last time I ordered one 5 litre of ep 90 and got two :D
Always turns up on time with no problems (maybe an extra :D)

Yeah, I had a look round their website; they seem like they know what they're doing and are well connected. Just about to order the 20L of EP90. :D

Whilst not strictly true there is an element of truth here, some of the re-branded oils (halfords e.t.c.) are identical to some of the premium oils but sold cheaper however the cheap non-branded and imported stuff is missing the vital additives that help prolong life, reduce wear e.t.c.

In an older vehicle it is not so important but modern oils need to be spec'd correctly for a variety of reasons, there are so many oils I now keep 7 200L drums of various specs and about another 10 25L drums of the not so common but still needed stuff.

As for the OP, personally I am still using ATF DIII, it was spec'd until recently and therefore is fine, its cheaper and will do no harm. Ford done the same recently changing the spec of all their vehicles right back to the first zetecs from semi-synth oil to fully. Any pre-2008 vehicles we will generally stick with S/S to keep servicing costs down, even ford technical agree its a waste putting F/S in early vehicles...
