Not really an off road question more like an on road one but has anyone been over the Hardknot pass in Cumbria? I've heard its an"interesting" road to spend an hour or so in low range on :D

Cheers we are spending a week up in Cumbria in a log cabin and fancy doin a bit of touring around the lakes and North Yorkshire, any other routes to try.

Hardknotts is driveable in high gearing on my Disco 300tdi as I use it as a short cut when we have been testing with MSport at Ennerdale Forest. Used it many a time back in the '70's as it was a selective (have seen over the ton on the top) on Road Rallies and is still used on Le-Jog each year. You will enjoy the views if it is clear.

thanks guys obviously someone has been exagerating about how steep the road is to me, the way he discribed it to me I was ready to fit the winch to the front of me disco.

I've cycled over it (when I was younger and my legs didn't look like budgie legs, which they do now - see my avatar ) and it was a killer, but driving over it later on in the MGB the only problem was not being able to see past the bonnet. If you want a steep hill, I think one of the steepest in GB has to be Rosedale Chimney.

Even Rosedales not that demanding in a family saloon. The road up to Levisham near Pickering North Yarksheer is pretty steep and has urpin bends on it, but still int that demanding in an ornery car. The steepest most demanding surfaced road Ive been on is the one over the hills into Applecross on the west cost of Scottishland.

Have you bin on the road along the north coast then it's absolutely brilliant on a bike the whole road is surfaced with that extra grippy stuff they save for crossings round here. Shags yer tyres though.

feckin expensive to run -
30 to the gallon
rear tyre every 1000 miles
chain every 1500
sprockets every 3000
eggsaust headers rusted through in 15 months
forever havin to clean the **** off the seat
