hi all my girlfriend has got a s reg freelander(pre td4 engine, rover L series engine i believe) we brought it with a blown turbo. i have replaced the turbo and it still smoked and was difficult to start first thing. I carried out a full service(fuel filter, oil filter, air filter and fresh oil). still the same. so i removed the injectors and had them cleaned and tested and they came back fine. i have checked the timing and that is all spot on. It doesnt burn any oil or loose any water. The smoke is thick black smoke indicating its over fueling.
first question. Any ideas what to try next?
second question.Can a rover 75 2.0 turbo diesel engine be fitted?(looks the same)
third question. If a rover engine cant be fitted can the fuel pump be fitted(next thing to test)
any help would be greatfully recieved as it would get her off my case and give me an easier life :rolleyes::D
 
Hi Rob, one of the important things you haven't tried are the glow plugs, not the easiest things to change but easy to check. Fuel pump a possibility but have you had a look at the intercooler pipe from the rad to the inlet manifold, especially the section across the engine top? If your old turbo has been playing up this could be choked with oily carbon.

As for the Rover engine, be careful, I'm in the process of doing the exact same change. I removed everything,g/box, idu and then the engine, put the replacement engine in and guess what, I should have offered the gearbox to the engine before putting the engine back in the vehicle, the freelander box dosen't mate upto the Rover block. I'm being told by people who should know these things that their is a plate in between the engine and g/box on the Rover car. I haven't found one as yet to see for my self so I'm not too sure as yet. Please,,,,let me know if you have the car the engine's coming from, I'd really like to know if this is the case.

i have checked all pipes etc i havent got a rover engine yet it was just a question. once it starts it still smokes when its at running temp and still a pain to start.
 
Hi Rob these engines (or at least mine is!!) are extremly sensative to glow plugs .... this transformed mine. Make sure you buy NGK ..... they are really good quality and make a huge difference. I am confident this will resolve your problems. By the way if this is an old truck...... replace the glow plug relay at the same time as a matter odf course....this is a big black sod located in the big L shaped electrical control box next to fuse box....it is an easy job. I went to BMW who sold me one for £11..... (320D 2002 model used same relay). Good luck keep us posted ..... DONT USE CHEAP GLOW PLUGS OF FLEA BAY!!!
 
Sorry!!! note you have L series ..... same will apply really. But glow plugs will only effect startup and intial running. I believe one glow plug is situated behind or tight against primary fuel pump....and is a complete barsteward to remove......it needs to be done....possibly fuel pump off job..ulp. Also check fuel pressure regulator and water temp sensor. Good luck sorry about slightly misleading 1st post of mine.....
 
i cleaned the intercooler out. think the next step will be pump off and take it to droitwich diesels for them to test. and if thats ok i think it will be new engine time as im just spooning money at a dud engine i think.......... any one want to buy a *cough* good freelander engine.. *cough* never let me down :D
 
Don't be in a hurry to change the engine. black smoke is indicative of over fuelling not a knackered engine.
Check change the ECT sensor and ensure pump timing is absolutely spot on.
 
i got all the timing marks all spot on and wiggled the biggest drill bit in to the pump pully (think it was an 8mm or an 8.5mm) so i would say that was spot on...... the only thing i couldnt find wa the hole to lock in to the flywheel. its also developed quite a loud squeak from 3000rpm. i have checked all inlet pipes etc and everything is fine.???!!!! bloody freelanders should have brought a hilux!!!:doh:
 
Agree .... don't think yer engine is knackered it is a fueling issue ...... could be pump timing these are supposed to be super sensative to it ....... get a specialist to check and adjust... don't forget coolant sensor only cost a few squid... good luck please post outcome..
