Hi guys.

Got a 2008 range rover sport. Got in it today havnr been used for few days and i released the handbrake as nornal and message stays on the dash saying
Lift lever to apply brake

Any ideas please never happened before.

That car has an EPB, best if it's never used. Could be expensive to fix.

How can it go wrong if not used? It might seize up, but it will not lock the brakes on nore will it wear out the brake shoes leading to failure of the mechanism. Another piece of unnecessary unreliable tech.

They test on mot so if not used could seize in off position. Adjusted properly and regularly it should be problem free

Like most things in life, use it or lose it.

This is no cheap 20 quid pair of shoes handbrake, (which I agree wholeheartedly is should be) its bloody expensive if not looked after, and the most basic looking after, is to adjust it annually, saves a shed load of grief.
Hanbrakes on all vehicles since the dawn of time have been aggro.

Isnt the frenc mot 24months? and way tougher than the uk one? if so 24mths without being used is asking for trouble.

Never ever had a problem with a mechanical handbrake, occasional lube and adjust is all that is required, the EPB is a regular problem used or not. Yes the MOT is bi annual here, so you get 2 years trouble free if you don't use it then a quick fettle for the MOT.

Been using mine daily for 5.5yrs, check/adjust annually, most of the time does not need adjusting at all, but exercising the adjusters does no hamr at all, but not checking and letting it overstroke is disaster time.

along with a few hell Mary’s to boot, lol

must admit still think replacing upper wishbones has been the worse job I’ve ever done , u haven’t lived if u haven’t done one , snigger
 
The mechanical shoes need adjusting now and again, stripping checking for wear and lubricating ever so often, otherwise the electric activator will overwind and screw itself to destruction. Maintained will last a long time, lack of servicing cause fails. When will people realise you cannot just jump into your car every day and drive around without maintaining it.

And complain about the cost of it when it's not been maintained as it should... :(

34 years and the handbrake has never needed adjusting on my MR2, it uses the rear disc pads with a special auto adjusting caliper, it does need to be reset when new pads are fitted though
