went out today in the 90 and i think the hand brake seems to be sticking as the lever feels a bit spongy[springy] and theres a definite feel of wheels sticking any tips on a remedy would help .Is it easy?or is nowt easy with these things :blabla:

Your handbrake is on the back of the transferbox, there's a snail adjuster for.....erm.....adjusting. Drive it, stop, reach underneath and feel the drum, if its hot shoes are rubbing

which 90 300 and later or before,300 on is just a cable but worth removing drum and cleaning assembly ,same with 200 and before but check lever mechanism on sie of box too

I had the same issue with my 90, needed the handbrake to come apart and a bit of a refurb, brake drum was a git to get off as it had quite a lip on the edge so replaced the drum and shoes and the route cause was a spring that had come off so shoes were not pulling back in, I could have just refitted it but while I was there gave the whole thing a clean and new bits. That sorted it.

I gave up and fitted an x brake. Worth every penny. It will hold on 70degree slope now.

used these b4 very good handbrake,as soon as my 300 tdi handbrake starts playing up its getting binned for one of these :D

there's fook all wrong with the standard tranny brake - just folks can't be arsed to look after it or get it set correctly - and think throwing money at it will be easier

MMTS again

I disagree.

It's functional, but not ideal off road. It WILL do it's job, if looked after like you say, but an X brake is an incredibly good modification to do. It holds better, and requires less maintenance when the vehicle is well used off road.

I've had 110, 90 and disco and never had to adjust handbrake on any of them (the 110 did stick on when I first got it but soon sorted that out.) Have never had handbrake fail to hold on a slope either?? So for me I can't see the point of forking out for xbrake.

Had the same feeling on my 1991 90 plus I could smell the drum getting hot. A couple of hours to strip, clean & rebuild. Mine was old solidified grease in the expander had glued the pistons and not allowing it to release. Good as new now

x brake is great for lazy spanner shy people, who like shiny things, who don't like getting their hands cold or dirty and have money to waste

and I bet most of them own a Dyson

Grippa changed his - coz he was fed up of cleaning the ****e out of it after Salisbury. Its main advantages are that it is self cleaning, and easy to check pad condition.

Ouch!! Actually I am very handy with a spanner and have changed engines, gearboxes and diffs on the old beast. But as it i sued 90% off road and pay and play, it was getting way to much like hard work to keep stripping and cleaning it and it would stop working just when I needed it most and not in a convenient place to fix like the side of a welsh mountain!!

The x brake is a fantastic bit of kit, zero maintanance and works every time.
