What is the correct procedure to check the operation of the transmission brake on a disco 1 for mot?
I will be getting one of my techs (ford dealer so no experience of trans brakes) to test mine at the end of the month, he's ad adamant you have to use a rolling road or a tappymeter, whereas I thought you only checked it held the vehicle on a slope rather than applying whilt the vehicle was moving.

Depends if the mot center has rolling road machine for 4x4's or they'll just count the clicks, usually no more than 3

Ours does have a 4x4 mode but all that does is counter rotate the opposite wheel so the prop doesn't spin. Therefore you cannot use it to test a transmission brake.

when i got mine mot'ed he put it a 4x4 machine but then said my tyres were affecting it so he got what think was a g meter out witch he stuck to the floor and booted it down the yard and slammed the anchors on and she passed with flying colours :D

Yes that would be the service brake ie the footbrake both methods would work. I was talking about the handbrake.

decelerometer, Tapley Meter :)

Same with a handbrake...maybe not quite as bad as slammed the anchors on. MOre of a pull it on. It'll have to be rubbish to fail.

You can check defender foot (service) brakes on normal rollers with no problems. Its things like RRC with viscous centre diiff you have problems with.

And I'm not James Martin but you can call me James if you like :D
