Handbrake issues. what needs a doosin' to herr?

Eavning nippers, 1986 2.5 n/a. Hand brake has gone completely slack up to the last click where it fully engages, when coasting in neutral there is most of the time a loud clunking/banging noise from what sounds like the handbrake drum. Is there one of the shoes come loose inside the drum?? What else would corse this Cheers!
