Hi guys

My jobs today were to grease the props and UJ's on all the cars. I also wanted to adjust the hadbrake on the wifes '99 4.6. I noticed that on the rear UJ where it joins onto the handbrake drum all 4 bolts were loose - very loose. I have tightened them up but was wondering if this is a sign of something else that needs investigating.

Also I was following RAVE for handbrake adjustment and it says to raise one rear wheel off the ground, tighten the adjust to 25f/lbs check that drum is locked then back it off by 1.5 turns and check that drum is free to rotate. On mine without any adjustment the drum will not turn. I have the auto box in P. RAVE doesnt mention anything about the gearbox. Am I doing something wrong or is there a problem?

I would chock the front wheels and try it in neutral as putting vehicle in park locks the gearbox which inturns lock the props

Mine handbrake is on.three clicks and you can't move the car via pushing it or on a slight hill it won't move but to be honest I never use the handbrake I just leave it in park I work the handbrake every so often to stop it seizing on

Thanks Matt, I have tried it in neutral but this didnt make any difference either.

Calipers are all good. I'm beginning to think that I may have a seized VC. Not sure how you test it tho'
Jack one front wheel, gearbox in neutral, you should just be able to turn the wheel with a great deal of effort.
If the bolts were loose on the UJ you ought to replace them as they will have been hammered.

If you want to turn the rear or front prop you will have to jack up a front wheel as well as a back one. The front and rear drive is coupled throught the centre diff and the VC. Chock the grounded wheels. Gearbox neutral.

Thanks Tony, tried this and was able to get the wheel to turn so assume VC is ok. Not sure why RAVE doesn't explain this for the parking brake adjustment or maybe I just misunderstood it.

No that is just to turn drum to adjust hand brake, follow instructions from Data to check VC. Jack up one front wheel you should with some difficulty be able to turn the wheel. Should turn slowly with 70 pounds feet of torque applied to half shaft nut.
