hand/transmition brake.

I have just tried to take off my hand brake drum but when I turned the adjuster one way the drum locked up (good) then I turned it the other way and it locked up,only moved the adjuster 1/4 turn either way to lock up the drum.
Mid way it is fine (nice and loose) but why is it locking up both ways?

Is it a tapered square section? If so it tightens momentarily as you go over the diagonal. turn it further and it will loosen again.
Not sure about Landys, but Minis used to be like that.

What trewy said. The adjuster works on 90 degree steps, each step takes it a bit further in or out, but it has to go over centre first.
