I'm replacing the front brake cylinders on my series 3, I purchased new ones but the brake drum is locking up, on further investigation the new one is approx 3mm bigger from the base to the shoe slot, I'm presuming the shoe is hitting the side of the drum, anyone else had this problem or is it just my incompetence?

Photo shows difference.

What part numbers did you order and which side did you fit them to.
I go for TRW ones not cheapest but last longer than the Britpart variety
when you say lock up is that when you tighten the wheel on

I just ordered part number 243744 rh
Yes its when I tighten the wheel up, I'm presuming because its 3mm is deeper than the one I took off but I'd have thought they'd be the same?

Probably is your issue, replacement just looks wrong. What make if any? Send back as faulty.
I just ordered off the wonderful eBay, it's from premier supply, says County England on the box, unfortunately they don't accept back if its been fitted.

I paid £16.75 for 243743 last October from PA Blanchard , I also like the genuine shoes,
I also had the drum tightening up when wheel on , but for me it was catching on the brake adjuster , there is not much clearance perhaps up to 1mm before it can jam so that 3mm way too much, I would argue with supplier they are not fit for purpose and give poor feedback

Thanks for that, yes I checked behind the shoe for clearance on the adjusters and I have good clearance, I backed the height adjusters back but that didn't help so in conclusion I can only put it down to the cylinder being different, I'll contact the seller but I'm not holding out for much, anybody want to buy a series 3 with dodgy brakes?

Faulty is faulty, take it up through E bay if you can be bothered or lesson learned and order from known LR part suppliers.

Well I just put some old ones on a mate had off an old 109 and they went straight on no issues, I'm going to take it up with the seller and in the mean time order some TRW ones as Steve mentioned, thanks for your help!

It is an issue with vehicle parts these days, poor quality no markings parts or just fake's on the market. Got caught myself last year with some slave cylinders The box's were Delphi [ well known parts people] Slaves themselves were rubbish.
Given the safety aspect I recon the D.O.T. is lax regarding the numbers of such parts on the market.

It is an issue, a couple of years ago I bought a fuel tank for a 2A from britpart, had to cut an inch out for the filler tube as they'd made a batch wrong, had I been keeping it it wouldn't have gone on, but brake parts or anything safety related should be more strict in manufacturing, nothing made in Britain anymore and when it is its poor! Thanks for your input by the way.

Even the big boys get caught sometimes.
My local MOT station had to report an issue to the D.O.T. The Ford Fiesta has been a popular car around here. Issue was cars were coming in for their first MOT and just about all were failing due to delaminating flexi brake pipes. He had a box full to show the inspector and I think a recall was instigated.
Good you are sorted.

While we're on duff brake parts - hang on to your original drums for as long as possible. As of last year the suppliers I use had all stopped buying them in because they were all getting returned. All so badly machined. I got my worn ones skimmed to just slightly outside book tolerance and hopefully they'll last until someone starts making some good ones.

Well after a few emails back and forth the company sent me a full refund without me sending the useless things back, but I'll send them anyway they are no good. I did have to wonder on some of the statements in some emails!

"I've just spoken to my supplier
You need to remove the small long plate. It comes out with a couple of taps with a small screw driver. We just tried it here in our workshop.
This wheel cylinder is used on a different application as well as Land Rover. On the other application you keep the small plate & on Land Rover you don't.
Our supplier forgot to remove them before sending them to us. That's a job for me to do today with all our stock.
Really sorry about the hassle, but once you have popped them out which takes a few seconds all should be good."

Ah, the plate, yes I know the plate he referred to but taking that out only reduces the diameter not the height from the back plate, the outside of the shoe is hitting the inside of the drum, the original cylinder shoe seat is 20mm from the back plate, the replacement is 23mm, removing the plate won't change the height, I can get the drum on with that plate in.
