Firstly let me say that I have already had a sleepless night and have considered self flagellation as a punishment for this, so please don't lay into me too hard. :(

Basically, I thought I'd flush the coolant system after I had to mix coolants after doing some previous work. An easy job, so I thought.

So after emptying the coolant, I started by flushing the radiator - except I didn't - I filled the Intercooler with water because instead of removing the radiator top pipe I removed the Intercooler 'in' pipe. I can't believe I'm writing this it sounds so stupid - I've changed the coolant numerous times, I just don't know what happened.

So having done this, and not realising, I started the engine, which obviously stopped promptly.:(:(:( Then I realised....

So I am now in the position of having to remove the 'out' intercooler pipe, and the inlet manifold to remove any water, and will have to hand crank the engine to remove any water left in there. I know there may be other serious damage internally, but I'm just planning on doing what I can first to see if it works before submitting to the professionals. My bro is a LR mechanic, but is 4hrs away so can only help over the phone.

So, on removing the drivers side wheel and wheel arch, will the engine hand crank OK from there?

Also, if there is ANYTHING else you can think of that may need doing, or any other advice I'd be most appreciative.

Cheers,

Oscar

Ouch!
this sound like one of those £essons you dont forget in a hurry.
First thing is to remove any water left in the intercooler and then remove the glowplugs (TD4 does have glowplugs?) and crank the engine to remove any water left in the cylinders. Then do a compression test, whilst praying.

DO NOT CRANK THE INJUN WITH THE GLOWPLUGS LEFT IN!!!

if yu try cranking it with the combustion chamber sealed and with water in it - yu are likely to bend a con rod. - by removing the glowplugs - any water can be ejected out of the cylinders (over your garage wall).

funnily enuff water aint compressible

take the feckin injectors out then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! do not crank until you are surem, and i mean really sure there is none left in there!

I mite have meant injectors - but providing yu have some way if getting rid of the water in each cylinder - thats the important thing.
Will that mean bleeding the injectors of air afterwards?

this is wot should happen (merkin yutube)

i'd even be dubious about cranking with injectors out, its only a smallish hole for the water to get out very fast! i'd get out what you can manually first, perhaps a fish tank pump????

The other thing I forgot to mention is that its been sitting overnight and all of today, so likely some (all?) water may have found it's way past the pistons into the sump

Injectors tend to seize and can be a pig to remove, easier to remove all four glow plugs, put in gear and rock till engine has turned one or two revolutions then crank away. ;)

It has four MHM... DSC00355.JPG

Firstly Oscar, your honesty deserves all the help we can offer. I agree with Chaser. Once the glow plugs are out you might try sucking out the water with one of those pumps which connect to a drill? Build it all up and see if she'll run. If she runs ok then switch off and do an oil and filter change. If she bangs, smokes and rattles then call your Bro. Good luck.

I may be wrong MHM but I think the TD4 has glow plugs on only three cylinders!!

As I suspected, I am wrong with my statement. Both the L series and the TD4 have four glow plugs. Sorry for the confusion. I know that somewhere I picked up that there were only three... Must have been a different engine I guess. Good luck, Dave
