Personally, I would never dream of trying it but I'm curious so am asking, does anyone think it would be humanly possible to hand crank a cold 2.25ltr diesel in a series 3 and successfully start it?
I think not, 'cos even with a less than fully charged battery you just can't get the cranking speed high enough, hand cranking you would just be barely turning 45 degrees at a time.
Thinking of offering a ££'s reward to anyone who can prove me wrong, start up a cold engine by hand and no easy start?

Impossible in std state....when I had a 2.25d I did consider a kind of DIY decompresser idea...the way they hand crank start small deisl dumper trucks ect,

I read of my idea in a boat mag to be able to get a boat deisel running if the batt went flat,

From what I remember it involved placing suitable pieces of metal between the valve and rocker pad...with strings/wires attached to be able pull them out once the engine is rotating,

Got to be a risk of broken fingers I would think though,

I started my daughter Ford ka with a broken starter a few weeks ago by jacking up on drive wheel and wrapping a nylon strap around the tyre....cant remember which gear I used...think it was 4th but it has to be in gear ignition on and just pull the strap fast...worked a treat,

Must try it on my 200di in my S3.

Nick.
