I'm very jelous of everyone's LED lights lol! I have 6 halogen lamps (small rectangular Ring Microline) on a bar on the roof, 2 that have become reversing lamps 2 fog lights and 2 that are rear work lights for when I'm hooking up the boat etc.
I have about 10 more in a box lol. I was wondering if anyone had tried led bulbs in such an application?:lalala: I'm looking to reduce pull on the poor battery.

Are the kits to convert any good? Or do I need to replace them with LED units? Seems a shame to replace them all if there's a way to stick an led inside :)

You can replace them with an LED "bulb" but in all honesty you will get much better performance out of actual replacement lights. I've yet to see a replacement lamp that can even get close to that of the most average boring LED units and certainly not last that long. The main trouble with the LEDs mounted to existing lamp holders is other than direct radiation, the heat has nowhere to properly sink away to, giving a short lifespan. Additionally due to the nature of the control circuitry a semi-atmospheric light housing isn't the best place for an LED, compared to a sealed unit.

One possible solution if you really wanted to keep the existing housings is to go to 35W HID, but in reality I wouldn't recommend it due to their long warmup time and slow reignition. It'll fit, and it'll work, but I think you'll quickly get annoyed by an HID setup.

LED new units can be bought quite cheaply now, although avoid the cheapy units off ebay due to the fact that many have a stupidly short cable on them, making it a pig to join in a sensible place, and the driver circuits on them are often massively strained.

If you want any further pointers on choosing units, ping me a PM as I'm slightly biased in that I work as a Technical Sales monkey for UTV Products (suppliers of LED lighting) but I'm sure other people will be around shortly with their views. Either way go with people that you can get hold of over the phone and provide decent aftersales.

That's awesome! Just what I needed to hear :) I'll sell off the halogens and replace them with leds in that case!

Do you know how many halogen 55w spots a standard car can safely support? I'm just curious!

How big is the alternator , and battery/batteries ? :)

I figured it out lol have 96amp max output from the alternator (measured) so I'm guessing it's the 100amp one and each lamp pulls 55w at 12v so easy to figure out from there :)

I'm currently drawing a total of 67amps with heaters on so I'm actually well within limits. If like to reduce the amount of bulbs to change more than anything haha. I get a week once a year when I have like 6 bulbs go lol
