Hi guys, got all my axle apart to fit my new CV joint on the drivers side, pulled it all apart as per Buster's guide but I can't get the cv joint to split from the halfshaft. I thought they should pull apart but they won't budge  Any ideas?

Cheers harry.

There is a snap ring that runs in a groove on the half shaft and fits a similar groove in the inside of the CV.

Hold the half shaft vertically with the CV downwards. A swift couple of 'taps' with a copper hide mallet on the inner ring of the CV and it will come off.

thats the usual proceedure i agree...

when me n mate dun mine a couple of months back i was trying to seperate them and after 2o mins nothing..give it here you tart he said..he tried for 10 mins..
in the end we decided to buy anuvver new set...
we had the shaft in a vice and where wacking the ****e out of it with a sledge hammer and even after all our efforts we could not budge it,dunno why we wacked it to destruction and could find no explanation why they wouldnt seperate

The explanation why it won't come out is if the snap ring is too loose a fit and comes over half way out the groove. So, when force is applied (hammer it off) it tends to try come out (well, part of it) rather than be pushed into the groove to allow the CVJ to slide off. Some snap rings are a good fit, and some are a rubbish fit and cause these kinds of problems.

Thanks guys, i did as said and gave it a few taps which promptly turned into some swearing, lots of cigarettes and a much bigger hammer but didn't want to damage the halfshaft. Took it to the agricultural engineers in the next village and he hit it much harder with sledge hammer and it popped off straight away. Apparently the ring was very loose.

Thanks for the help, should have it back together in a few days to see if these funny noises and vibrations have gone

Harry
