Hi Dudes,

Having changed my rear disks last weekend, thought I'd clean up the front brakes today.

All was going well until I noticed that the last guide pin is seized absolutely solid. All the others on all the other callipers have been absolutely fine, but this one is jammed tighter than, well a very tight thing.

I'm a bit surprised as the rubber boot seems fine and the other pin on this calliper is also fine.

I've been filling it with WD40 for the last hour but still no movement. Anyone got any tips?

(P38, by the way)

Guy

(typically I didn't buy new pins for the fronts as I assumed they would be as good as the rears - I don't supoose they are interchangeable?)

Hi Kooky

I just did mine yesterday and both caliper carriers had one of the little pistons seized. I removed the carrier and put held the piston in the vice and gentley managed to leaver it free. Both pistons cleaned up beautifully and were not rusted at all just full of some kind of grind.
Might not work every time as I recently did the ones on my rears and both carriers were unrecoverable and had to be replaced.

Hi JT,

Yes, I remember your rears. Weirdly my rears seemed to be in far grottier condition than the fronts yet all seemed to come apart ok.

I've tried whacking it with a hammer (both directions), twisting it, squeezing it with a vice and a g cramp and it just won't move at all. It seems to be stuck about half way.

I spose I'll just have to let it soak overnight and see if that has any effect. Might have to get a new carrier myself if I can't shift it but the carrier seems to be in perfect condition (and it'll take ages to get one - need it Monday!)

i had same prob a few weeks back except it wouldent free even in a vice with heat
ended up just buying a used caliper from ebay, takeing off the carrier bracket and swaping it with mine!
the whole caliper only cost £25

WD 40 won't help, try a release agent like Plus Gas.

I was waiting for someone to say that. Must get myself some more some time - I'm sure I had some somewhere...

Anyway, it's out! :D Thanks JT for your suggestion. I misunderstood the first time and just stuck the carrier in the vice.

Put the head of the pin in the vice and it finally started to move. No rust on the pin, just gunged up grease.

So, just got to bung it all back on now. Happy days!

Thanks all.

Guy
