Left hand steering wheel down (anticlockwise) as far as it goes, I then reverse, and left wheel groans. No big deal but I seem to remember on the MOT a few months ago said something about bearing play and needing nipped up. Could it have got worse or is it something else? Groan only started last week. Thanks in advance if you offer a suggestion.

Why would you not nip up the wheel bearing when it was noted on your MOT??

Could be PAS pump groaning, check the fluid level to start
I dunno why they didn't. The bloke I bought it off (and MOT) might have been dodgy. Funnily enough I was going to buy a new power steering thing for 500 rather than a recon a month ago as the lad doing my brakes said it was leaking. However, I filled it up with PAS fluid and the level's not gone down since (about 4 weeks since I filled it up)

What he said. :p
Had a similar problem with my PAS pump, not sure it was a groan though..

No it's just left hand down for some reason.
Are you drifting around roundabouts and hammering full lock? You naughty boy!

Usually anything on the full lock either way is power steering based - the advice from someone else to check the fluid level is good. See if it gets worse - sometimes problems have to get worse before you identify root cause easily....

I suppose you'd call it a 180 degree reverse u-bend manoeuvre lol

Mine makes a bit of a groaning/hissing noise on full lock in both directions. I think once you get to full lock there is a bypass valve for the fluid and it makes a noise as it goes through that.
That's interesting. I'm sure if there's anything wrong it'll come to light eventually (hopefully not after I've ploughed through a hedge :0). It's definitely only just started though. I'd have noticed it before.

Sorry, should have said if it sounds as I've described above, then I don't think it's anything too much to worry about. Power Assisted Steering is exactly as it says. It uses hydraulic pressure to assist the steering mechanism. If the PAS box fails, you don't end up with a steering wheel disconnected from the road wheels.
