Hi folks,
My SWB had a recond gearbox put in only 2 years ago but its started to not want to go into 2nd gear to well. It grinds when selecting it, either up or down the box. In does go in however but with difficulty. It does select fine when stationary and doesn't jump out of gear when selected. All the other gears are fine. It also has a fairley overdrive that works in all gears including 2nd.

Any ideas why 2nd gear is playing slly buggers?

Thanks.

springs popped out or broken in the synchromesh hub on a SIII box? It's not a IIA box is it - they are supposed to grind when changing into second and first. You could drain the main box and see what bits of metal come out in the oil.

yeah , mine wer like gold hammerite when i first drained it , after 50 years :D
the IIa box's were always like that , mines better now its rebuilt but whay bother ! if its a 3 , as above ;) ^^

Don't 2aboxes grind cos they need double de-clutching? i'm just geting to grips with this new concept for me.... luckily got a new box in, saves wear in the long run tho...

2a boxes have no syncromesh on second gear so they will grind and clash if you dont double declutch going up and down the box, also dont use your overdrive in first and second gear cos theres to much torque in the lower gears for the overdrive you will induce premature wear at the least or it could just disintegrate with a bang, believe me i have seen it happen, stick to top or occasional third gear use+keep an eye on the oil level in the odrive......dave

if it were awt like my old one, in to third, clutch up to bite point to slow the gear box down , clutch back in in to first , then double de clutch , away yer go,
