Green laning modifications

Hi Everyone

I recently bought a Discovery 300 tdi which is my daily drive to work and also work horse for towing log filled trailers and tractors at the weekends. I want to get out green laning but was wondering what modifications would be needed to get out and about and tackle most green lanes around beds and herts. I have already de-catted it and lost the EGR i also have some AT tyres on it but within the next few months will have a new set of General Grabber ATs on as the others are looking a bit low.

The main thing people seem to do is the 2" suspension lift. Is this necessary and will it make a big difference on the lanes?

Also looking at fitting a winch bumper and winch along with sump and diff guards.

My problem at the moment is finances I cant afford to do everything at once so what order of improtance would you put on the standard modifications?

So keep it the way it is, with new ATs when you can afford them. You'll be suprised how far you can get!

If you need a "suspension lift, a winch bumper and winch along with sump and diff guards" you probably shouldn't be driving the lane - go to a Pay and Play.

As above, a standard Disco will go a long way. I am doing more to my Defender cos I want to do some P&P's (and it looks cool).
Other than getting the vehicle working right (service, UJ's etc) tyres were my first purchase as I wanted as much clearance as the other people likely to be driving a lane, I went for 235/85/16's which seem to be the most popular.
I've fitted a diff guard on the front just in case I misjudge things (I'm new to green lanes too).
Next will be a steering guard then a lift - the lift is not for green lanes really but the extra articulation in the setup I'm planning will help.

just drive it, get some decent A/T's on and you'll soon decide what you need/want next

just make sure you spend a bit on changing all the fluids and filters etc

Hi,

Apart from diff and suspension guards you wont need any unless your going to get a little more extreme, have a look at the link below you will see a few cars managing a lot of Yorkshire country lanes including mine with no mods. Even the Gaylander did most of it in standard form.

Just make sure you have good recovery points, front and rear and a couple of heavy duty straps and shackles. You should be fine for most lanes with that.

Oh and by the way........ Do not go out alone!

Thanks everyone, tbh that is what i wanted to hear the modifications can wait for the time being then. I was concerned that everyone on the laning videos etc has the 2" lift and guards etc and was thinking if this was necessary on lanes to protect the truck and prevent damage then i would do it before hand.

So for the time being i will put the new tyres on and see how far i get.

hi tom, your best investment would be some diff guards as they are the lowest point on the car, plus they are not to expansive around £20 for a pair.
i hope it starts warming this week, got my boiler test end of the week on the 4" foster. hope you have that roller well wrapped up.

Once again thanks for the advice I will look at getting some diffguards fitted for a bit of protection.

Glen the roller is still in the shed we did plan on getting it out next weekend for a run to the pub for dads birthday but if it dont warm up its staying where it is. Hope your boiler test goes well.

tyres, diff guards & steering guard (get one with recovery points, 2 birds one stone...) more for peace of mind than anything, Ive clobbered me towbar, never the diffs yet, but its nice to know they are protected.
