Just a brief view of a recent, very positive trip we took:

Spent around four hours today driving the highways officer for Teinbridge round some of our local lanes. Come the end of the afternoon he was a complete convert to GLASS, green lane driving, and 4x4 use in general (when used by safe, sensible drivers such as ourselves).

Now I must admit that it helped a great deal that the highways officer concerned is my old man! However, he deals with complaints against 4x4s on weekly, and sometimes daily basis, and we have not always seen eye-to-eye on one of my favourite pasttimes. Over the past couple of years we have had many discussions on the pros (put forward by me) and cons (put forward by dad) of green laning, the cons all coming from second or third hand experiences which my father has had to accept over the phone from some of the many 'antis' living locally.

Today he saw what green laning is really about. We took along my son, my sister, my father and my mother. Mum had a stroke a couple of years ago and doesn't get out too much (though I have taken her out laning before), but today my dad was able to see how much green laning can be of benefit to certain members of society. The nicest thing though, was that he was able to see that all the 'anti' ramblings are just so much hot air. He is now a complete convert.

I know it was somewhat easy for me but I urge you, if you care about our lanes, to offer to take members of your local authority out with you and show them what we are all about. I know it has been done before, and today I saw just what a difference it can make.

Great idea Chris, if it stops them from closing down anymore rights of way!!! here in lancs we have distinct lack of lanes to drive because of closure so anything to help is much appreciated
On another note, i wont be down devon/cornwall this year so we will have to put our lanning trip on hold!! going to take the lanny and family to france, so will have to check out their countryside
