ChrisV8 i wouldn't turn up to drive a lane without having first checked its status before hand. Thanks for pointing the site out to me as it saves going through the council.

If you are going to the Lakes don't just rely on the map go to the National Park site
Lake District National Park Authority - Green Road Driving

Read all the advice on here and abide by that advice please. The Bobblies have a field day with people who ignore whats on here, Dave Robinson the Trails Advisor is a nice guy and very helpful if you ring them. Gatescarth Pass is very restricted now with a permit system operating and a 100 inch wheel base restriction. A gang from Liverpool LR Club, Glass and TRF have just repaired the UCR in Grizedale forest accessed West to East from the visitor Centre end a really nice route with some interesting rocky bits you will spot the repaired area as there is no big puddle now so Dave gets no grief from the Bobblies. Be aware though if it's a busy day you may find Kankku using this route the wrong way against all advice

Dont worry i wont be breaking the law! im a bobby lol! thats why im trying to learn as much as i can! Thanks for the links and advice!

flybynight

  Thanks for that, living right next door in the dreaded Dales National Park I get very twitchy about using the lanes in the Parks without doing the research. I spent a very enjoyable day repairing the UCR in Grizedale with Dave Robinson (LDNP Trails advisor) in attendance helping on his day off, together with Geoff Wilson of LARA/TRF these two guys are fighting for us to retain the rights to drive these lanes and we must not give the Bobblies any more ammunition. The muppets are destroying the lanes in Wales now thanks to the magazines publishing routes which they use and then stray far from the route if that happens in the Dales or the Lakes the National Park will TRO everything, it has started in the Dales led by a vigorous anti vehicle and bike campaign. Geoff Wilson is doing his best on both access commitees but please don't give them any reasons.

I think the LDNP have a good balance in their approach as they publish all the routes and give guidance a good example unlike the Dales.

Let me know when you are intending to go and I might tag along if allowed. Can't go over Gatescarth as I have a 110 though.

Yes, Breasthigh road off the A6 Kendal to Shap but best run from East to west marked on OS maps as a byway, two good fords at each end LRW went over it recently. Some roads up towards Kirby Stephen that I have to investigate but Paul de Borde the GLASS rep reckons they are good, with one really good ford. There are some others up the Eden valley towards Penrith that gain I haven't driven yet.
