Had a quick look on the latest 1:25000 series maps of the S.Lakes today, seem to be many green lanes in that area (have ridden most on my mountain bike). Shall get the maps Saturday (no money on me at the time) and then sort out a route with a view to doing them in the next couple of weeks.

To be honest im in an old 200tdi disco at the momment but i take delivery of a 90 mid to late june! my 90 will have all terrain tyres on and forgive my ignorance a metal plate thing under the front but really i could afford to add alot more to it. so its not got it suspension done or anyting! its having a full respray etc so i cant really afford to add everything i would like. like roll bar etc.

How do you tell what is a green lane on a map and where do u find em! i looked at glass and im thinking of joining them.

If you are only planning to do only green lanes either with your Disco or the replacement 90 just good AT tyres are all that is required, I use a 300 tdi Disco that has BFG AT's fitted with no other modifications done and that has not caused me any problem at all.

My biggist concern was under the 90 ! i cant afford for it to get protection everywhere. But glad to hear my tyres will do the job! :)

So how do you work out maps etc? how do you know where u can go?

Byway open to all Traffic (BOAT) is shown as an upturned letter "t" in green following the route, that is on the latest 1-25000 series.

Don't go overboard with your 90 because if you start putting bull bars, winches, ropes tied on,big wheels and tyres, suspension lift, lights on the roof the other users of the lanes associate you straight away with a monster truck and that is when the complaints start, keep it simple and standard looking (closer looking to a farmers vehicle-no complaints). The only underguards to consider in my opinion are diff guards and maybe a tank guard (would have to be serious off road to hit the tank) with good solid tow points front and rear.

Excellent point often just a standard 4x4 with road tyres gets you most places lot depends on the driver

use a standard series now, with cab top, ivor williams cover, broken taillight two barking dogs bit of straw hanging out the back.

And some start asking you if its ok to be on the lane

Whole point of camouflage is to blend in with the surrounding

It works esp, going along the lanes which go though an old farms, the ones were the garage/barn is oppersite and the lane right on he doorstep.

Once heard a woman reply to her partner "its only the farmer" when he hear us outside, normal to get a good rant from them

Nor do you get other farmers chase after you they often think you are another looking for lost sheep or something, and the bobble hat brigade stop and talk to you

Quite pleasent really

thats it I'm going to get meself a S11 or 3, never clean it, fit some worn out tyres, get some green overalls with John Deere on and go laning anywhere I want.

yea and for my next trick i'll get a white 90 hard top, stick the Snowdonia national park big "coat of arms" on the door side, nice new yellow flashing warning light on the top and a big sign "WARDEN" on the rear cab side, keep to avon rangermaster tyres, fill the dash with "country code" leafets and hang me work pass round me neck.

The last Disco that I had was the same green as the forestry commission, which used to be great going up to Cumbria a lot. We where forever up there as part of the Ford WRC test team (still are) even Adrian the head forester for all of the North of England used to comment on it and he even used it on one test when we had some troublesome ramblers as it looked more official than the stupid white Maverick that he used.

I think i will add some protection to it as time goes on! but from what your saying im not going to need all that! :) so happy days! Now all i have to do is wait while they get there act together and rebuid it for me!

If you are going to the Lakes don't just rely on the map go to the National Park site
Lake District National Park Authority - Green Road Driving

Read all the advice on here and abide by that advice please. The Bobblies have a field day with people who ignore whats on here, Dave Robinson the Trails Advisor is a nice guy and very helpful if you ring them. Gatescarth Pass is very restricted now with a permit system operating and a 100 inch wheel base restriction. A gang from Liverpool LR Club, Glass and TRF have just repaired the UCR in Grizedale forest accessed West to East from the visitor Centre end a really nice route with some interesting rocky bits you will spot the repaired area as there is no big puddle now so Dave gets no grief from the Bobblies. Be aware though if it's a busy day you may find Kankku using this route the wrong way against all advice
