Hello all.
I am thinking this Sunday I will try a little Green Laning. I have seen a article about a lane near Datchworth, near Stevenage. Would this be ok for a novice. I see from the O/S map that there may be more just east of Stevenage, a Roman Road takes my eye.
What words of wisdom can you pass onto me.
Thanks

Try not to go on your own, or if you do, then get out and walk anything suspicious before trying it.

Better being over cautious and able to get home I think

; )

That is extremely good advice.

If you go alone, and meet some anti 4x4 nutters, they can PROVE you tried to run them over simply by telling lies. Taken to extremes if two or three of them said that you tried to run them down and rolled about in some mud to look the part and put a few of their handprints on your front wings, you could end up on an attempted murder charge, and might well be convicted.

NEVER go Greenlaning unless there's a fair few of you.

If you are near Datchworth Give Spyderman a Pm he is out Monday with some noobies I think the plan is to go more Ashwell way but give him a Pm or post a message on the Herts Laners Section you will be most welcome! Jai

Going out alone is a really silly idea. There are a few experienced green laners on here who carry all manner of recovery kit and even they tend to go with a friend if possible. My personal experience is that if you go out on a lane you may well get stuck... if you are alone and have little experience you could be there for a long time!

Jai's comments are spot on... PM spyderman who is out in your neck of the woods this weekend. Make sure you have recovery points front and rear (not tie down points).

My own experience of ramblers is that while some of them are not too pleased to see us, many are just as polite and courteous as we are. They expect us to be foul mouthed and aggressive, but once they realise that this is not the case they are usually OK.

Remember that even green lanes that are suitable for driving alone (many have been resurfaced in Hertfordshire during the last two years), you can still get a puncture or suffer a mechanical failure. This is a pain at the side of the road of course... but it is a real problem in the middle of a lane where there may not be firm enough ground to lift the vehicle.

finally... CharlesY suggests that there should be a fair few of you, and to a point I agree. However, the optimum number of vehicles is about 4 (my opinion only). More that this can cause problems if you have to turn around and abandon a lane, and a huge stream of vehicles is generally frowned upon in any case.

I could ramble on for a while but you get the drift!

Sailbiker, Do not be put off by our recovery point issues if you haven't already, pm
Spyderman. Somone usually carrys spare jate rings for the front of your vehicle on a laning trip that can be fitted before you leave tarmac. Depending on what Disco you have it could be a quick fit. Also the planned route is very gentle scenic and a bit of mud. This weekend he has a few noobies going so it may be ok. Its down to him as he is leading but he might be ok with a tie down loop for this weekend only as long as you have a rear tow bar fitted and be sensible. but it is entirely down to Spyderman. Jai
