Hi all,

I have just picked up my new landrover, its an ex SSE utility vehicle so came to me very well specced and in great serviced condition, i am keen to start green laning as i love the outdoors and so does my family, ive been doing some research and it looks like the best option is to join a group as i will admit i am a total novice when it comes to off-road apart from the odd lane with my ur quattro years back! are there any local meets i could tag along with to get confidence and skills developed?

Hi and welcome!

There are several clubs local to you, Solent and District LRC and Shire LRC. Both are active laning clubs from Facebook so worth a look.
 
Hi and welcome. I’m getting ready to start laning soon, but have done a bit of off road trialling in the past in a SJ410. Good luck finding a club nearby, and I’m sure your ex SSE vehicle will do you proud. :)

Just been given a load of old O/S maps by a friend so I'm hoping to head out soon, what a great vehicle glad i took the plunge its come in handy for work we are pulling in armoured cables with the winch at the moment, SSE certainly didnt hold back on the spec its fully loaded.
the hydraulic ladder racks will be up for sale shortly if anyone is interested?

Be careful relying on OS maps, not unknown for there to be a few mistakes on them.

I would recommend as said above, join a local reputable club( most are now on FB) but not just a gang of lads who hang around on FB.

Join GLASS, then find your local rep

Learn how to access the local County council definitive maps.

Learn the difference between "Off road" as you put it, Greenlane, UCR, Byway, restricted byway, TRO, Seasonal TRO, Voluntary restrictions.

Do not go by yourself unless you know the lane.

I defiantly wouldn't go alone, my mate has told me some horror stories some very expensive, I'm not looking for anything extreme its my daily driver and used for work so i cant afford to break it! just a bit of fun really, ill be joining some clubs and the Glass site looks worth the investment, thanks for the advice.

With GLASS you also get trailwise 2 which is worth the time to get used to. Plus for navigating I would recommend getting either viewranger or memory maps with the OS maps downloaded onto them .

This is why finding a good responsible gang of people to go with is so useful, as you can learn so much from them and each time you go out you get a little more from it. Or if you choose you can just sit there and enjoy following the leader.

One thing to always ask is about risk of damage, this year has been pretty bad for overgrown lanes ( due to not being driven) causing damage to paint and panels.
