Freelander 1 Graunching noise under braking

Afternoon all,
I've had a problem on my FL1 TD4 for a while that I'm still trying to pinpoint.

There is a graunching sound whilst under medium to hard braking, sounds like it's from the front. Pads, discs, shoes and drums are all fine. VCU is a refurb unit from Bell only last month, the issue predates this.

Light braking from speed doesn't appear to cause any problems, so I'm confident it's not the brakes. But when slowing to a stop for a set of traffic lights, etc the last 10-15m of braking can be quite loud.

Clutch in or out makes no difference.

No noticeable play in the pinion bearings from the IRD or any driveshafts.

Any suggestions welcomed!

Nothing at all.

Here's a video I took earlier, it's hard to make out but just towards the end of the clip you can hear it. The sound comes across as it is, but it is much louder than in the video.

sounds like brake pad metal-backface rubbing on the disc ..

i know this were stated ..

Pads, discs, shoes and drums are all fine

even so .. it be exact same sound as when a front pad were worn down to nearly-metal
two occurrences ..
there were a sticking calliper in the equation as well ..

Or corrosion on the disc edges rubbing on the metal part of the brake pad at the hardest application of the brakes. Discs wear and then the pad drops into the wear grooves ! In the good old days when pads were made of asbestos - the pads wore out before the discs

I agree sounds like worn brake pads

Yep brake pads or discs are overly worn.

How ‘okay’ are they when you looked? It could be one pas is fine with lots of meat left and the inner pad has worn right down (if a callipers piston has seized)

Thanks guys.

Pads and discs have both been replaced by myself in the last 8 months and checked again since then.

However after a bit of reading it appears some people have complained about a similar noise only under hard braking, when they've had poor quality discs fitted.

I changed the discs when a front caliper seized on, so along with new pistons, seals, etc, new discs and pads were also fitted. I don't remember which discs, but chances are I went for the cheaper option ECP had at the time.

So next step is to change discs and pads for Pagid items and see.

Will update once done, if there are any other suggestions please keep them coming.

I'm just hoping it's not an input bearing on the IRD or 'box.

To confirm, just checked pads and discs again. Lots left on both inside and outside pads. Discs have a very small lip but nothing that would rub on anything.

The nsf disc does look to be a bit more scored than the os and of course can't check the inside face of the disc without whipping them off.

i doubt its poor pads or discs sounds like metal or grit
