Nathan,I use a laptop with Memorymap when out green laneing ,what you need is a GPS usb receiver ,like the one in the link below,if you send an eBay message to the seller, tell him your requirements ,and he'll be able to sort you out, when the unit arrives, plug it into the laptop before you switch it on,under the tab marked "gps" you will find another tab,"gps set up",in this box you will find a box marked "port",in here you can change the number, the number corrosponds to the usb port on your laptop, its simply a case of altering this number until the GPS unit and the laptop are in syncronization, (mines com 6) ,it might sound complicated ,but it isn't,I know feck all about computers and i got mine to work.

Thats summat to think about, The laptop ive bort is one of them notebook things 10' screen and it aint got bluetooth so maybe usb wud be better than having a b/t toggle aswell as everything else. No good to me from h/k if i want it fer this w/e tho

Rik im gonna have to get a downloaded copy of mem map cos it aint got a drive either ive got an external drive but i think it'll be too much messing about installing it when we're there

ok mate we can set it up over next weekend

Nath Don't buy owt until you've seen my setup next weekend. £120 for netbook, Gps and screen/dash mount, to keep it secure when Laning.

Basically I've got an Asus EeePC, similar to this one

A Maplins USB GPS receiver similar to this but I only paid £20 for mine

& a GPSforless Dash mount to carry it all.

One thing to consider when greenlaning is that the hard drives in laptops are not that robust, nor are the larger screens. A netbook might be a better bet (like the Acer one mentioned - which had a solid state disk which is pretty much lane-proof :)).

I use Anquet maps which will run on a laptop or windows mobile smartphone - similar in price to Memory Maps and don't know which is better. I like the fact you can "cut your own" map area, so you're not limited to OS map areas.

It's really great to track where you've been, but not so good if you're leading as on most pocket device displays it's hard to see enough of the roads between lanes to navigate smoothly (actually, maybe that's just my senility :D )

i got my gps dongle from maplins has worked a treat on my notebook , as to damage to hard drives i have not had any problems made a bracket/mount for it and lined the base with foam rubber to cushion it against bumps
