cut the rust out and seam weld. it will be worth it in the long run

I vote butt weld. All rust cut out. Nice neat plate welded in all the way round.

Hmm i thought but welding was welding with a small gap,i would cut out the rust and butt weld a plate in the hole,it would be flat with the weld ground down.
When i say a plate on top with a seam weld it wouldn't be flat because there would be a plate on top of the good metal.

Yea your right ignore my post above.
a butt weld is more suited. All the rust can be cut outwith a butt weld anyway. It's a lap joint when you stick a plate over and weld round :doh:

butt welds arent the best with thin material ,joggle the edge if you want it perfectly flat

Hi JM, I was thinking the same. Use a joggler and you'll get a nice, strong and professional-looking finish.

It's a footwork not a body panel ffs, cut out the rusty bits treat and seam weld a slightly bigger patch over it lather everything with some decent wallop and jobs done. I can guarantee the rest of the disco will disintegrate before you need to redo the patches.
Exactly what I was thinking, if you don't have a show disco then there is no point in over cooking the goose. If you don't have a joggler then they are 50 quid plus to buy. Just weld a plate over it red oxide the bigger and go get it muddy!

Had my first go at welding today
I cut out the rusty bits and welded a plate over it rather than but welding it as im just not good enough yet and keep blowing holes and or cant get good penetration.
I used weld through primer and painted the bits that i cant get too before welding,ive primed and painted in all the gaps so i presume its ok to use tiger seal then paint then under body protect?
Or should i have welded the underside too?

ive seen much worse, you only need to weld one side , i use brushable seem sealer on joints and welds after cleaning up with the grinder then paint once set

no need to over egg the pudding.i personaly would weld the underside too just to make it look a bit neater. but seam sealer and underseal will be fine, considering that's your first go at welding may I say.WELL DONE. don't look bad at all.
