Hello all on the forum:), I've been lurking for a while gathering information on getting my recently aquired L reg disco going. I bought it at auction before xmas. The idea was to get something pretty sorted for my new work, (and play) wagon. It is a bit of a tatty one but appeared pretty sound underneath, so I took a chance. Especially as I had not had a chance to start this one to check for clunks. It was mine for £900 with 12 months tax. Naturally the clutch was k-nackard. I managed to limp it to my blacksmithing workshop with a fair cue of people stuck behind me on the hills.
I had a bit of a time of it doing the clutch, changed the seal behind the flywheel, and did the sump as oil had got on the clutch from somewhere.
Now it works, hoorah!
I took it to my local landrover garage to have the belts changed as I wanted them to check it over. They did the ball joints and A frame one as well as a few other bits and it handles sooo much better now. Some of the clunks have stopped too!
I'm left with a fair amount of welding to do for mot in April.
Dreaded rear floor- replace
inner wings-patch
New front bumper, maybe make one
patch or two on the rear wings and sill
Also apparently 3 body mounts are holed, although the holes must be pretty small as I haven't found them yet.
After all that I guess I'll paint as I go then waxoil when its a bit warmer.
Fun fun fun. Its allot more work than I had in mind but i'm really enjoying the Disco and now I've made a start....well
So just a little introduction to say hello, Im sure I will be popping up with some daft questions from time to time.
Cheers All, especially for the encouraging technical threads.

Ah Cheers, I'll have a poke around:) Reccon it'll be a good long weekend on the floor rear wings etc, forgot to say the rear axle pan is porous also:doh: So I may as well have that off and the tank and do it propper, well blacksmith propper.:D Im a little bit tempted just to drain the oil from the diff and thicken the pan up a bit with overlapping runs with de mig, might look a bit of a fright though, or possibly distort it terribly:eek:

rear axle pan on mine is weeping slightly too,you can buy weld on replacement pans (have a search on YRM metal solutions, L.R. series, flea-bay, paddocks, etc) or some people weld patches on (make sure no grinding or weld **** gets inside to knacker yer diff)

Yeah, ive seen a few of them, I like the look of the hardcore 6mm one, plenty of metal to weld to:) Squishing out a pan on the press crossed my mind, but by the time i've made the tooling I may as well buy one:eek:
I guess doing some of the other bits would be easier if I took the axle off. ha haagh, Im having a good introduction to the workings of it anyway. I had to look up what diff lock did the first day I had it. Now I know, i'm finding it impossible to get myself snowed in.:D

get yoself a bolt on diff pan - or dont fit diff guards, coz they trap mud and water and cause the pans to corrode like mad.

Cheers , not seen a bolt on option? Wouldn't that involve drilling and tapping the axle. Quite happy welding a hardcore one on. Will take me ages to get the diff out and all the gubbins though. Ah well.
