Just done a bit of work on Wendys TDi (yes I know) but I think the same applies the the vastly superior (well nicer anyway) Disco II.
In the last few days her steering has gotten really heavy and I was worried that it might be new pump time - and after 178 euros at the vets this morning I was not a happy man.
Anyway, I thought I would have a little tinker and found a way to improve it substantially for very little cost.
You will need:
a length of clear plastic pipe of a size to fit on the bleed nipple of the steering box;
an 11mm spanner/socket or whatever
3 to 4ltrs of Dexron IId or III (2 x 2ltr bottles so you know how much goes in)
A 2 ltr empty oil bottle;
A viscous fan spanner
Here's how to do it:
I wanted to change the pas fluid completely. I was very surprised to find that the system holds 3.4ltrs of oil !!
I got everything readily to hand so I could do this on my own. So, drivers window open, keys in ignition, bleed nipple slackened off and pipe attached, other end of pipe in empty bottle, fresh fluid to hand and pas reservoir lid off.
Remove the viscous fan.
Start the engine, the oil pumps out at a manageable speed on tickover not frightening floods, I continually top up the reservoir.
Keeping an eye on both the reservoir level and the catch bottle level, the old oil is pumped out whilst the new blood goes in.
As you get close to the top of the catch tank bottle, ie 2ltrs of new fluid in, close off the bleed nipple with your fingers, then stop the engine. Empty the catch tank and set everything up again and do this for a further 1.4ltrs of new fluid.
You will now have shiny new fluid in the pas system and, all being well, a much lighter steering.
Sorry there are no pictures, but to be honest there was nothing much to photo and it was getting dark when I did the job.
