On my 90 i can only get the glow plug light to light up if i hold the key between just ignition and starting the thing. On the springy bit of turning the key if you get what i mean? Is there any other way or is it screwed? I swear the guy i bought it from didnt do this and just turned the key and waited for the light to go out?

you turn the key to position II, the plugs light will light, then after a period of time it will go out - you then turn it to position II which fires up the starter - dependant on the age of your vehicle you might have timer so that after approx 15 - 20 seconds the light will got out on it's own

Its 1988 2.5 TD. Hmm i dont think its working right then. Like i said i can only get the light to come on when holding the key on the springy bit of ignition just before it starts...

Doesnt sound right does it?

the TD didnt have a timer relay fitted as standard - it sounds like your's is working exactly as it should - position II is spring loaded and will drop back to position I if released - or will rotate to position III and engage the starter if turned past the spring load

i think that is right blind. ours wernt fitted with a timer relay, or so im led to believe. it took me 12 months before i realised this is how it worked! i kept cranking it over and over!

Ahh right cool! lol! I thought i was just tricking it...lol!

Will the light go out or just illuminate whilst the glow plugs are in action? I just normally leave the light on 10 secs then turn her over.

but, just because the glow plug light is on don't assume that the plugs are actually getting hot - they arent expensive or difficult to replace and would make a lot of difference on these colds days if you have been struggling to get it started.

it wont go out on it's own - 10 - 20 seconds is about right, the colder it gets the more heat is needed

Its deffo working as if i dont do it she doesnt start but if i do its immediate.

Thanks for your help guys. :)
