glow plug changing

Hi all

While i was working away yesterday my 2.5 dhse (52k miles) wouldnt start for my wife. She called the RAC who came out sprayed some easy start on the glow plugs and away it went, they told her to get the glow plugs changed, which she has had done today. I've just had the major 48k service done as i bought it with 51k and the service hadn't been done. My question is should they of changed the glow plugs as part of the major service?

Hi Nick.
Phone the garage tomorrow and say that you have a Dhse and you want it serviced please. Ask them how much it cost's and what they do as standard as they've been recomended by a friend. If they dont mention the glow plugs (which i would not expect them to change) mention them and say that someone said they should be changed as a matter of course in a major service, was this correct. Remember that they dont know who you are.

No, glowplugs are not a sevice item and you only replace them when broke

Hi again.
On other makes of cars that i have worked on the glow plug light has been on a different timer to the glowplugs themselves, (Volkswagen) and what worked was turn on the ignition, watch the light go out but continue to wait for about 10 - 15 seconds and then you would hear a relay click as the plugs came up to temp, the car would start as normal, maybe after 2 - 3 cranks on the starter motor. It also worked on both the diesel Discovery's i had. I know that you have had the plugs changed now but it might be useful for someone else. I am assuming that it cured the fault?

I give my plugs 2 goes before cranking, this works everytime. engine fires first flick then. Shame it doesnt when its warm. Will try tigapglets fix when I get the chance. Got the Sprinter to fix this weekend so no playtime in the rangie.

Yes they were changed at a LR specialist, they supplied and fitted 6 glow plugs all for £78 including the dreaded VAT which i thought was quite a good price? Wife been out to it this morning and it started 1st crank so she's happy and my ears have stopped bleeding from her screaming at me lol
