Hello,

Yesterday I did a full service.
I also planned to check on the bolt that's holding the oil-pump-chain-drive in place. As more people stated that in some disco's the bolt did come loose, meaning no oil-pressure.
So as I had to do a full oil-change, I undid the sump, but it was impossible to get it out. The front right corner just was stuck behind some iron-tube (looked like cooling-fluid-pipe) tha I was noe able to move.
I wa lukily able to check the tension on the bolt, which was ok.
But as a result I didn't change the gasket.

Anybody knows what the pipe is for?
And how would you be getting the sump off anyway?
Because even with the corner not being stuck, I'm not sure it would have cleared the top of the front axle.

Thanks, Koen

You have to remove the front crossmember, and jacking the body "up" to allow the axle to drop also helps.

www.discovery2.co.uk / TD5 "Famous" Oil Pump Bolt

I did take the front crossmemeber off.
Jacking it up may have cleared the axle.
As I was using my father-in-laws pit, I could do that at that moment.

What about the front corner?
I tried removing 2 bolt to move the tube (+/- 1" tube, seemed coolant - also visible on your pictures :D)

before u put the sump back it's recommended to unscrew the retaining bolt of the oil pump's drive sprocket and put some adhesive on it.......it's common on Td5's that this bolt has a kind of personality and use to unscrew itself while driving.........and then u're fooked......when the light on the dash will worn u that's no oil pressure it'll be too late

Sorry I didnt see the link which already said that:frusty: I was just in a big hurry to worn u

I guess that pipe you describe is either the feed or return for gearbox oil cooler.. although may be wrong!

I got the sump off my TD5 without removing the cross member, as I rung some of the bolts on it.

I just removed the oil pipe held on with 2 bolts, that it mentions on the RAVE CD. I had more problems getting the sump back on again and remember one of the corners snagging on something. Alot of maneouvering got it on ok in the end.

Jacking up the front of the car to extend the suspension helped greatly, as all ready mentioned.

Cheers Andy

It's not at all PAS or box-cooler pipes.
It's a solid metal 1"-1,5" tube. In the front it connects to a up-side-down Y joint.

Still I was able to check the oil-drive-spocket-bolt, which was ok.
Just hope the sump isn't going to leak as I didn't change the seal (because I couldn't get the sump off).

Regards, Koen

Same here getting the sump off was the easy bit!

I re-used old sump gasket and it's fine :)
