I recently replaced my front ball joints, the ones that are bolted to the hub and connect with the rearmost compression arm.
After jacking up (2.5T trolley jack ) and securing on a couple of axle stands ( better safe than thinking 'ouch', cos you sure as hell wouldn't have a chance to say 'ouch' if it fell on your head )
I set to removing the road wheel, easy so far.. then i removed the main securing nut on the ball joint, after a few deft blows to either side of the arm, it seperated from the joint and i tied this out of the way a bit, as it gets in the way of the joint removal process, well, the hammer blows at least....
Next, i undid the 2 Torx bolts securing the joint to the hub, i was expecting them to be seized but i was rewarded as they came out a dream.
The joint, in theory should now fall out, but mine was well and truly rusted into the hub.
It is impossible to get a direct hit on the joint from the top, so i used an old chisel and got this between the hub and joint flange, it was very tight but persistence paid off and eventually you can get a strike from the top with a lever bar or such like.
Refitting is extremely easy but clean the hub mounting circle with emery cloth, and smear copper grease into this and the new joint, i also applied thread-locking compound on the 2 Torx retaining bolts and nipped up as tight as possible, and smeared grease into the tapped holes for Torx bolts from above, This should keep salt etc. away from the bolts for a while. i then used the jack under the arm to add some upward pressure whilst locating it onto new joint, tightened new nut and refitted wheel.
