Gona do my first filter and oil changes (TD5 with aircon), have see that there is a tremendous price difference between genuine and non genuine service kits! I want to do things right from the start, so is there a big difference in the benefits of fitting original Land Rover replacements or should I go with the likes of Britpart and others and save some cash? Would also like to know what replacement oils are best for this procedure? And will I be able to do it all without lifting the car?

Many thanks!

ive used all the kits and all including britaprt work fine ,main thing is to do complete oil changes on the vehicle at least yearly ,any reasonable correct grade oil from local trade motor factors is fine , it is all possible with laying on a sheet

Main stealer stuff is a rip off, the filters will be made by one of the aftermarket brands and same with oil. I would use a respectable make such as Unipart, Fram, Cooper, Halfords, Mahle e.t.c. as for the oil any brand will be plenty fine for your TD5, just make sure its the right grade...

I've had some problems with the pattern rotor filters. They either dont spin because they are tight on the spindle or when you bolt the rotor lid down they bind because the central bronze bearing is about 1mm too long. The suppliers will say they will bed in and loosen with use but if it is not spinning then it wont loosen. Shaving the bearing down is no biggy as we are not talking precision here but reaming out the bearings by a few thou can be a pain without the correct tools. If you overdo it with your black and decker the rotor will wobble on its bearings.

A properly working rotor filter can be heard spinning down for 10 seconds or so when you switch the engine off - its not the turbo spinning like some people think. Even at idle the rotor should be spinning at over 10k rpm when hot. If you cant hear it then it aint spinning so it aint doing its job.

Gen kits are not worth it, as they are just big brand filters painted white with LR stamped on them.

The only fiters I would not use are Britpart OIL filters, they don't have the non return valve in most of them, so all the oil pours back into the sump when you turn the engine off meaning every start the system needs to refil, this adds to extra wear to the engine.

You can check a BP filter by blowing down the middle hole, you should need to give it a bit of pressure and you will then feel/hear the valve open to let the air through, if you can breath through it easily then it's got no valve.
