general diff question

Help!?:confused:

I'm very new to landy's / diffs etcetc having only ever driven regular cars.

For a Defender 110 TD5 (2002)

After disengaging diff, in order to "turn it off" have to go into reverse first (don't need to move vehicle - just gear into reverse), then into first etc.

Is this a safety measure, (to ensure diff disengaged) or an indication that there is a problem?

timtheenchanteruk - really - it disengages itself after a few corners? Everyone keeps banging on at me to be certain / extra careful;

Different car - my parents: my dad turned it on and not off, my mom got in not knowing he had turned it on and didn't see the light and drove - many corners and along the freeway an all... uummm arguments galore...:fencing:
 
What Tim means is, if you disengage the difflock and the light doesn't go out, it usually will after turning a few corners, not that it disengages on its own after turning a few corners (if I've understood your last post properly).
 
mines a touch older than yours, and may have a bit more play in things to help it along, I can tell if it hasnt come out (as well as the light on) but never needed to back up to get it to release.
 
Sometimes the light goes out when I disengage central diff lock with the lever, at other times it doesn't, presumably because a bit of wind-up stress has found its way into the system making it difficult to disengage. The front wheels try to describe a larger arc than the rear ones when you go round a corner, so they're turning further and faster. A while ago I needed to jack up a wheel (which rotated about a quarter of a turn once it left the ground) to get it to release.
 
As Brown says when traveling forwards the front wheels travel further than the rears so if in diff lock your transmission will wind up. the diff lock dog isn't directly connected to the lever but is moved by springs hence if the trans is wound up the spring can't push the dog out of engagement, if you reverse up on lock the transmission will unwind and the dog pop out.
