Series 3 Gearboxes

Whitehouse & sons, Aztec engineering or beaumont are known to be good. Synchro gearboxes are interesting but I don't know anyone who's used them.

You could get yours refurbished. If it still engages all the gears ok, I wouldn't worry too much. Just make sure it's got plenty of the correct oil in it and be gentle with gear changes and standing starts. It may well last years.

That would be my approach. I've heard of more than a couple of people who get a replacement / rebuilt box from well known sources and they still jump or are a little noisy. They do seem to go on forever in seemingly very worn condition so if it's not 'too' bad, just treat with respect and change oil frequently.
