My gear selection has become very tight recently sometimes near impossible to move, luckilly i have another vehicle to drive so I dont have to use it, but I've bought someoil and was going to do it but Ive noticed a fair amount of oil on the transmition housing so I think I may have a leak somewhere so basically I just wanna find out if theres a quick way to check the oil level ie a dipstick or something to see if it is leaking and if it is would it be better to give it to a garage to fix or is it a novice job to replace seals or wotever might be wrong

sorry for the long explanation, please help!!!!!!

It could also be the bias plate and springs ... bottom of the gearstick .. do a forum search, I think there's a few photo's of it somewhere and what to do to fix it.

On a manual gearbox Disco I (I'm guessing) to check the oil level you will need a Torx bit T55 and get under the car to find the level/fill plug.

However, if your gear selection is becoming more different I would say that you might have a clutch problem. Does the clutch pedal have a normal feel to it or is it heavy/sticky and sopmetimes sticks down to the floor?

never sticks, is haevier than my car clutch but i think thats cos me cars clutch is weightless I couldnt get in first and reverse has been awkward for a while 2,3,4,and 5 were all ok

right guys Ive just had another look and the oil leak seems to be because the drain plug has gone missing any ideas where I can get a new one????

if the drain plug is missing the gearbox will be toasted

are you talking about the hole in the bottom of the bell housing where the gear box meets the engine?
coz if you are thats where the wading plug goes,

the gear box plug is a big 32mm bolt, the filler for thr box is a t55 key as said earlier

that could be engine oil mate, sounds like the sump is leaking, it is common on disco's
take the filler plug out the gear box and top it up, thats if it's not already full.
if you do need a gear box i have one you could have.
pm me if your interested
