Gearbox/transferbox whine

How do you hear it? Though the floor, or window or somewhere else? What happens if you do 35 in 3rd? My first thought is take the plate off the top of the transfer case and check the mainshaft nut is tight.

With series box's I found some were quiet, some moaners and some whiners. As long as the have good oil they keep going. Internal rattles not good.
There is not much to no whine if I do 35 in 3rd and I will check the nut. Cheers

Check it again, and the transfer box, if seal on main output leaks the gearbox level goes down and transfer overfills.
I have just went to see how tight the main shaft nut was and the locking tabs weren't even in place and I could push it with a screwdriver it was that loose, how tight should it be?

Much tighter than that. Resist the urge to hammer it tight, borrow the tool or knock something up and fit a new tab washer. If this gets loose it can do a lot of damage so its worth doing it well. Hammering it does the bearings no good, you need 85lbft. For £22.50 just buy it and have done, you are bound to need it again.
