gearbox problems

hi. i urgently need some advise.
im on holiday towing my 900kg caravan. on the way down here i noticed the gearbox was overheating as the lever was hot and could smell gear oil. kept stopping to let it cool and carried on as i was nearly there, but it started making noises. today i been under and topped oils up but it on needed quarter litre of transfer oil.
anyone know what my problem could be? dont really wanna ring RAC unless i have to.

'94 200tdi lt77 manual. 212k miles. just had oil changes too.

could it be that its just an old tired box that dont like towing long distance?

Dont really know if its the TX box there or the gearbox, does it change into L/H ok? TX box not to hard a job really, is there a large amount of oil falling on floor? stick some paper down and see. need mor e info really gearbox drive ok? remember driving a distance with wieght put a strain on the box but 900kg is only diddy it should do that fine.
