Hi All
my daughter has a td4 been running around with a slow puncture from reading guessing this has caused its most recent problem
gearbox output shaft bearing on the nearside needs changing.
can it be done in situ.
Or is it easier to take out the engine completely rather than take off gearbox.

Had a look for a guide on it but could not find

Thank you in advance

The gearbox does not drive the front wheels (directly). Power is sent to the IRD - the IRD then distributes power to the front wheels. It does this via a spline that goes into/through the gearbox - but the IRD powers driveshaft. Having said that - I haven't thought much about the distribution to the LH wheel and there will be a support bearing therefore the shaft.

Are you sure it is the bearing? The inner CV does go on Freelander - a lot more frequently than the NS bearing.

Is the car still 4WD? If its 4WD and she's been driving with a slow puncture, the IRD and/or rear diff and/or VCU are likely shagged as well as the gearbox. I'd be tempted to drain the oils from box/IRD and see if they come out looking OK. If it comes out grey its a sign they have suffered excessive wear and you need to reaccess how you address the issues. Loosen fill bolts (hex socket) before draining as the IRD one is made from cheese and often is rounded trying to get it off.

Also do a One Wheel Up Test to make sure the VCU is still serviceable and sort out the tyres urgently - make sure they are all same make/model/pressure (and hold air!). Have a quick read over this thread...

Good luck.

plenty has been done wrong on this motor tyres changed least tread to rear, not by me!

prop has just been removed to help. what sort of lifetime could it have like this?

its flopping about on the inner end of N/S drive shaft that goes into g/b or IRD
(only had a quick look presumed it was gearbox)

How loose is the inner CV? A couple of mm slop isn't unusual to be honest. As long as the seal is holding the oil in to box, it's not to serious. If the bearing is allowing more movement than the seal can cope with, then it needs sorting asap.

LHS is onto the gearbox. RHS is into the IRD and easier to fix, strangely.

How are you getting on with this?

did find out the shaft was ok as 2 wheel drive could well have been ok back as 4wd
prop shaft needed centre bearings. this was transferring as noise to the front n/s which has play as norm, strange when its centre bearings but there u go.
