Hi
does anyone know how to topup the manual gearbox on a TD4 without dislocating there arm? I tried for ages to get to it but failed. and not sure if its allen key or torx type. cant remove the undertray as mainly rivets holding it in place ( normal? )
have a leak, ( black oil ) but engine level has not changed since I noticed the leak around 2 months ago, but going by other posts, its cheaper to keep it topped up than fix....
cheers

The under tray has 10 bolts a marked by Longdog. The g'box fill plug is a 3/8 square drive - your 3/8 socket drive should fit neatly. I managed to fill mine from above, leaning over the LH guard so didn't have to get that tray off. It would possibly be best to get it off and have a look to see where the oil is leaking from, mine was the drive shaft seal.

For small top ups I use a 100 ml syringe, cheap as off the 'net' or you could try your local horse vet. You could lash out and get the 500ml giant syringe pump for filling g'boxes, IRDs & diff's.

managed to just about get to it from above, checked level, was a little low, but nowhere near the amount of oil that has been lost, and it wasn't the same colour either.
the oil I am loosing is definitely black. and while I was getting to it from above, I did notice that there was oil around the back of engine, small amounts on either side too, and on gearbox and IRD box ( hence I thought maybe gearbox leak ).
I know it will spray around due to air while driving. most of the oil ends up on the undertray, which is down to gravity I know, then drips out one of the holes in it.
engine doesn't seem to be using any oil, thou it is definitely due a change, seems quite thin, not the viscosity I was expecting...
is there anything I should change at the same time? as I have no idea when it was last serviced, and done around 6,000 miles since getting her back in December, and it has 148,000 on her, its a TD4...
still might be a gearbox leak of some sort...

Just a thought if the tray is in situ when last serviced would the changing of the oil filter being messy leave amount of residue to cause splash underneath. As you say black and old oil around the sump and back of the gearbox.

cant be from that, as I haven't yet had it serviced since getting it back in December, and it was clean then..
still don't know where the leak is coming from, but have wiped everything down. im hoping its from a hose or something simple at the back of the engine. have read that some of the big rubber hoses ( turbo? ) can leak oil out, but it seems a big wish lol...
each morning there is 2 inch ish patch on the ground from oil, and its definitely black.

You say that the engine oil appears thin and isn't going down. Black oil does fit the description of engine oil. Does the engine oil smell of diesel? It could be that you have a leaking injector.
Just one more possibility.

If you have a split turbo hose then very very black oil will be dripping out.
You will normally hear a hiss/whistle as the turbo spins up above about 1500 rpm too.

And start to lose power too and smoke ..
