This is clearly a newbie question, but where is the oil check and drain
plugs on the main gearbox in my 200tdi defender, and do I use the
'hatch' under the middle seat, or is it from underneath?

It's started really crunching into 2nd whilst on the move, so I'm
thinking me oil is low...........or hoping it is anyway !

Cheers,

Gavin.

When mine started to do that shortly after buying it and within the
3-month warranty, the dealer replaced the box with a recon unit, so
watch yourself on that one. IIRC reverse started to get unhappy too.

Note that it can crunch a little when the box is cold, mine's never
really done that but it has been somewhat stiff in the mornings but
loosens up after a few miles.

No problem, nobody was born knowing where the plugs are.

>From underneath. You don't say which box you have fitted, but both have

a similar arrangement. The drain plug is at the bottom on the right
hand side. The filler/level plug is about a third of the way up on the
right hand side.

WARNING!!! The fill/level plug is tapered and if it has been
overtightened in the past, can be a pig to remove. Therefore, *make
sure* you can get it out BEFORE you drain the oil. Otherwise, you will
have to turn the vehicle upside down to refill it. This will spoil your
day.

On the earlier LT77 box (reverse beside 1st) the filler has a regular
square head. The later R380 (reverse opposite 5th) has a TorqX type
plug and you will need to find a suitable tool to undo it. You may need
to use a long breaker bar to shift it if somebody's overcooked it.

Hint: to remove the square LT77 filler plug; a 12 point 5/16 Whitworth
socket is a perfect fit.

Peter,

Thanks for that, I'll have a crawl under tonight and check it out !

Cheers,

Gavin.

Peter,

Just checked the gearbox and my crunching is definitely down to gearbox
oil, or lack there of !

Going to have to get me a square bit for me ratchet as so far this week
I've tighten my handbrake and now checked the gearbox !

Cheers,

Gavin.

You mean, you drained the oil and it wouldn't fill a teacup? It's more
scary when you drain the engine and only a couple of pints come out.
Note that the LT77 takes ATF (Automatic transmission fluid) not gearbox
oil. 4.7 pints, you'll need.

square bit for the ratchet? funny I thought the plug was 1/2" in which case
just a short extention would do the biz or just a bare ratchet if you mind
your fingers

do you fill up the gear box to the bottom of filler? (LT77, as sqaure bolt) also isnt there another compartment of the gearbox you have to check? I am also a newbie!

has anyone got a magic cure for a pre-rounded level/filler screw on the lt77 box? not massivly rounded but tried it with wd40, heat, hammerin on a socket and i just cant get it to budge!

best grip i got was with an adjustable but with the rounded corners im just making it worse.

bustersbus you really are a god like creature! that will work. been following your how to's by the way, brilliant, huge help.

just need a how to do the fuel filter on a 200tdi now ;-)

Unscrew old one, stick new one on (after lubin' the seal wi' fresh deisel), open bleed screw on top, pump the lift pump until no more bubbles come out of bleed screw, tighten bleed screw (might need to replace copper washer) and that's about it;)

ta muchly!

im doing all this to see if i can get the black smoke down a bit.

big puff of smoke when i start it up and when i put my foot down, figure over fueling??

any idea how i may sort it??

Ah'm no' bein' funny when ah say try doin' a search on here as it has bin covered quite a few times;)
Ah think the puff o' black smoke on start up is pretty normal. Mines has always done it and even if ah boot it:D Think it might be down tae summit like pump timin' or summit? Doesn't really bother me much tho' so never got 'round to checkin' it;)
