Hello,

My 2003 Range Rover L322 4.4 V8 gearbox will not change gear from 2nd to 3rd and 4th, when I have been driving around local for 1 hour.

Tried shifting manually and still no luck. It is the 5 speed box.

I had gearbox oil and filter serviced 3000 miles ago.

It also jerks into gear from park to reverse or drive.

Been on a diagnostic machine at the garage and shows code : P1843...

Any ideas?

Thanks!!

P1843 - Transmission Transfer Case Differential Lock-Up Feedback Switch Open Circuit.

Or this from range rovers.net - I think the transmission lock is a General Motors code.

P1843 (17) * CAN time-out monitoring Maintains current gear in low range, limp home mode in high range. Shift pressure to maximum, harsh gear shifts/engagement. On On

So a CAN bus timeout. As a first guess, check the connector to the gearbox is secure, and as with all RAnge Rover faults, check your battery and alternator output is OK.

Maybe didn't investigate to deeply to be honest.:doh: ;)

Thanks for replies guys. I did look up the code in my booklet that came with machine but the code was not in there. Sorry.

It has done 111k miles. So this code suggests electrical fault not mechanical, right??

I do have harsh gear shifting. When I go from Park to reverse, reverse to drive and drive to reverse - it engages with a big thump as if someone rear ended the car.

I cleared code and drove for 300 miles but code still not back and problem is still here. I will check the connector to the gearbox tomorrow and get back to you guys.

Thanks

If you search google for information on the ZF 5HP24 and in particular by RRPhil or Bemble there is a tonne of information available
What you describe is common I thnk but I cannot remember the cause
